Українські мігранти: до проблеми визначення національної та мовної ідентичності

Abstrakt

В статье проанализирована национальная и языковая идентичность украинских мигрантов на материале художественного творчества Марины Левицкой. Исследование базируется на сочетании лингвистического, литературоведческого, психолингвистического и аксиологического подходов. Особое внимание уделено анализу высказываний автора о собственной национальной и языковой идентификации, речи персонажей, которая отражает специфику билингвального языкового сознания и ги-бридной идентичности. Показано, что в условиях миграции идентичность выступает как динамичная, изменчивая структура, которая находится в постоянном процессе конструирования с опорой на две культуры – украинскую и британскую. Языковые вкрапления, элементы украинско-английской языковой смеси, суржик и заимство-вания выступают важными маркерами национальной и культурной идентичности персонажей, иллюстрируя, в том числе, и поколенческие различия на коммуникатив-ном уровне. Национальная идентичность Марины Левицкой имеет двойственный характер: доминирующей является британская идентичность, тогда как украинская сохраняет символическую, культурную и эмоциональную значимость. Язык персо-нажей-мигрантов в ее романах выполняет не только коммуникативную функцию, но и аксиологическую, отражая систему ценностей украинских мигрантов. Резуль-таты исследования актуальны в условиях современных миграционных процессов, вызванных войной, и могут быть использованы в исследованиях, посвящённым про-блемам идентичности, современной миграционной литературы, социолингвистики и межкультурной коммуникации.

This article explores the national and linguistic identity of Ukrainian migrants based on the literary works of Marina Lewycka. The research is grounded in an interdisciplinary approach combining linguistic, literary, psycholinguistic, and axiological perspectives. Special attention is paid to the analysis of the speech patterns of the characters, which reveal the specificity of bilingual consciousness and the formation of a hybrid identity. The study demonstrates that under the conditions of migration, identity does not function as a fixed or completed category but rather as a dynamic and discursively constructed process shaped by intercultural interaction, bilingual experience, and sociocultural adaptation. The use of Ukrainian-English mixed speech, elements of Surzhyk, borrowings, and phonetic stylization creates a specific linguistic space that reflects the characters’ dual cultural be-longing and internal identity conflicts. The article substantiates that national identity in Marina Lewycka’s works has a dual structure: British identity operates as the dominant one, while Ukrainian identity remains subdominant, symbolic, and emotionally marked. This model of identity is determined by the peculiarities of the writer’s linguistic and cultural socialization as a representative of the second generation of migrants. Ukrainian identity is preserved mainly at the level of cultural memory, family narratives, emotions, and symbolic language markers. It is proven that language in Lewycka’s novels performs not only a communicative but also an axiological function, serving as a carrier of values and cultural meanings. Linguistic choices made by the characters reflect their strategies of self-identification, adaptation, resistance, and inner self-preservation. The study also em-phasizes the ambivalence of humor and linguistic play in Lewycka’s prose. While mixed language and phonetic stylization create a comic effect for the English-speaking reader, they may be perceived as offensive or ideologically biased by Ukrainian readers. This confirms that the perception of ethnic representation strongly depends on cultural back-ground and interpretative frameworks. The results of the research show that the works of Marina Lewycka constitute an important literary laboratory for rethinking national and linguistic identity in the context of globalization and contemporary migration. The article proves that language remains one of the key instruments of both identity preservation and transformation. The findings are relevant for studies in identity theory, migration literature, sociolinguistics, intercultural communication, and diaspora studies.
