The Image of Poland in Old Russian Literary Monuments
Abstract The aim of this study is to identify the most significant characteristics of the evaluation of Poland and the Poles in Old Russian literary monuments of the 12th–16th centuries.
The research methods employed include theoretical analysis and generalization. It has been established that in Old Russian chronicles, assessments of Poland and its rulers were predominantly restrained and neutral. From the second half of the 16th century, the po-lemical letters of the first Russian tsar, Ivan IV, imposed a negative image of Poland and its statesmen on Russian public opinion. The negative image of the Poles and their rulers propagated through these letters became widespread in Russian literary works. At the same time, already during the reign of Ivan the Terrible the first signs of the influence of Polish spiritual and material culture on the educated segment of Russian society became evident.
