The subject of this study is the evolution of the images of Poland and Poles in Russian literary monuments at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries. The representations of Poland and Poles in Russian writing during this period allow for the tracing of the key stages in the construction of a persistent image of the existential enemy. Based on an analysis of Russian chronicles (letopisnye svody), chronographs, and the works of Avraamy Palitsyn and Patriarch Hermogenes, the study identifies the role of the confessional factor in the sacralization of the anti-Polish narrative. It is shown how, under the conditions of the systemic crisis of the Russian Tsardom known as the Time of Troubles, the subjects of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth were labeled as «Lyakhs» and «Latins» and endowed with the metaphysical traits of «destroyers of souls.» In the Russian writing of this era, Poles served both as the cause of all the Russian society’s woes and as the explanation for that cause, fulfilling the function of the «Scourge of God» for the sins of the Russian people. The image of Poles as treacherous enemies of the Russian people, formulated during the Time of Troubles, became archetypal and continues to be utilized in contemporary Russian politics and the blogosphere.
